Bill Cowher elected to Pro Football Hall of Fame
Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Champion head coach Bill Cowher has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Hall of Fame President and CEO David Baker surprised Cowher Saturday night during a live broadcast of CBS's "THE NFL TODAY". Baker interrupted the show and delivered the news to Cowher.
Cowher will be a member of the Hall of Fame's Centennial Slate comprised of two coaches (who last coached more than five seasons ago), 10 Seniors (players who last played more than 25 seasons ago) and three Contributors (someone other than a coach or player).
Cowher coached the Steelers for 15 seasons. From 1992-2006, he led the Steelers to the playoffs 10 times, including nine division titles. He coached the Steelers to two Super Bowl appearances and one championship.
Steelers President Art Rooney II released this statement Saturday: "Congratulations to Bill Cowher on his election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. One of our most successful coaches in team history, Bill's energy and dedication for coaching was evident in every practice and every game. His Pittsburgh roots were perfect for our organization because he knew the history and passion of our fans, and he wanted to bring a Super Bowl back to his hometown. He accomplished that feat in dramatic fashion in Super Bowl XL. Bill was always a family man and made the tough decision to walk away from coaching at a young age to focus on them. I am so happy for his entire family, and I'm sure this summer in Canton will be a special time for Bill and all of Steelers Nation"
The rest of the Centennial Slate will be announced January 15th. Cowher and the rest of the class will be enshrined during Enshrinement Week, August 6-9, 2020.
