When Gwendolyn Murphy opens up a thrive box, she knows drivers are delivering quality food.
Murphy is the outreach coordinator for Thrive 18, which is an organization that works with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The group ships the boxes out to families who need them.
"I just feel blessed to be able to bless others,” said Murphy.
She said thrive boxes are different because they are packed with non-perishable, healthy items, such as black beans, food made of whole grains and ones with no added salt or sugar.
The food bank and Thrive 18 aren't just encouraging good eating habits, they are changing lifestyles.
Denine Miller works for Thrive 18 as well. She said along with the food, educational pamphlets are put in the boxes and creative cooking ideas.
Miller said, "A lot of people they don't want to eat black beans they've never had black beans, so you'll give you a good recipe for black bean chili."
The food bank says the thrive boxes are also offered at doctor's offices.
Marnie Schilken, who is the chief program officer for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, said, "Instead of them just handing you a flyer or saying good luck, call the food bank, the provider could literally say I have a shelf stable food box right here in my office, you can take this home with you."
Miller said it brings her joy to help others.
"All are welcome here and that's what I love about it because it's like a rainbow of people that we serve and it is such a pleasure to be able to serve people," said Miller.
When Thrive 18 delivers the food, workers make sure to connect families to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank so they are informed of other resources.
