With starter Ben Roethlisberger on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the Steelers signed quarterback James Morgan to their practice squad Monday.
Morgan, out of Florida International University, was a fourth-round pick by the New York Jets in the 2020 draft. He has yet to play in a regular-season NFL game.
Mason Rudolph started in place of Roethlisberger on Sunday as the Steelers tied the Detroit Lions, 16-16. Dwayne Haskins is the only other available quarterback on Pittsburgh's roster.
It's unclear if Roethlisberger could be available for Pittsburgh's next game, a Sunday night matchup with the Chargers in Los Angeles.
Under NFL policy, a vaccinated player who tests positive and is symptomatic must be symptom-free for 48 hours and have two negative tests 24 hours apart before returning to his team. Roethlisberger has said that he is vaccinated.
If Roethlisberger is unavailable again, the Steelers will try to beat the Chargers on the road with a backup quarterback for a third straight time. They won with Michael Vick in San Diego in 2015, and with Devlin "Duck" Hodges on a Sunday night in Los Angeles in 2019.
