The National Hockey League’s Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of a majority interest in the Pittsburgh Penguins to Fenway Sports Group, the NHL announced Thursday. The Penguins posted a statement from CEO David Morehouse regarding the NHL Board of Governors' approval saying, “Fenway brings to the Pittsburgh Penguins everything we can ask for in an ownership partner to continue the historic success of our franchise. They understand what the Penguins mean to Pittsburgh, they know how to win, they are a great cultural fit with our staff and our city, and they can be trusted to build upon the legacy of what Mario and Ron created here.”FSG already owns several high-profile sports properties, including Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox and Liverpool of the Premier League. As part of the deal, Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle will remain part of the franchise's ownership group. The NHL said the purchase remains subject to negotiation and execution of documentation before the transaction can be closed. “It scared me that it’s a Boston-based group. I hope they don’t try to move the team, but with them keeping Lemieux on as an owner, I don’t think that will be the case," Penguins fan, Cody White said. There will be no immediate changes to Pittsburgh's management structure. CEO David Morehouse, general manager Ron Hextall, president of hockey operations Brian Burke and head coach Mike Sullivan will all remain in their current positions.“Hopefully it would be a seamless transition, because they’ve been quite successful, and, you know, we’ve got a good team in place, and I’m looking forward to the season," Penguins fan, Don Hester said.
