MADE POSSIBLE WITH A DONATION FROM GREEN MOUNTAIN. ANDREW: TIME FOR -- KEY:LL IT’S METI FOR THE ASK KELLY SEGMENT TODAY. OUR QUESTION IS ABOUT AN SYEA AND CONVENIENT WAY, TO HELP OTHERS, THAT YOU’VE PROBABLY SEEN AROUND TOWN. >> HI. I’M MARY FROM PLUM. I’D LIKE TO ASK KELLY WHO TAKES CARE OF L ALTHE SHOE AND CLOTHING BINS AROUND TOWN? AND WHERE DO THE ITEMS GO? KELLY: NO DOUBT, WE’VE ALL SEEN THOSE BOXEOFS DIFFERENT SIZES AND COLORS. SO THANK YOU MARY, FOR THE QUESTION, SO WE CAN LOOK IO EXACTLY WHERE YOUR DONATIONS G THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS THAT SET OUT DONATION BOXES, FOR A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT BENEFICIARIES. LET’S START WITH THE SALVATION ARMY. >> ALL THESE BOXES RUNNING UP. BUTLER, NEW CASTLE, DOWN TO UNIONTOWN. OVER TO LATROBE. OVER HERWEE HAVE ALIQUIPPA. THAT’S OUR AREA RIGHT THERE TTHA WE SERVICE. KELLY: MAJOR MARK UNH, ADMINISTRATOR AT THE SALTIVA ARMY, SHOWS US THE PROCESS OF HOW YOUR CLOTHES AND SHOES, BENEFIT THE COMMITY.UN THERE STAFF TRAVELS TO THE VARIOUS BINS ACROSS THE REGION, TO COLLECT YOUR DONATIONS. THEY LOAD IT ALL INTO A TRUCK, AND TAKE IT TO THE MAIN SALVATION ARMY WAREHOUSE, ON THE SOUTH SIDE. FROM THERE, ALL THE ITEMS ARE UNLOADED AND THEN TAKEN TO THE SECOND FLOOR FOR SORTING. >> THIS IS MAINLY DONAONTI BOXES. THEY ARE PLACED INTO THESE, PUT ON THESE STANDS AND WHEELED OVER TO THE SORTING TABLE. THE ITEMS NOT SALABLE WILGOL INTO ONE OF THESE AND DROPPED THROUGH A CHUTE THAT GOES DOWN INTO THE BALER. KEY:LL THE ITEMS TTHA ARE SALABLE ARE PRICED, AND SHIPPED OUT TO SALVATION ARMY THRIFT STORES AROUND THE REGI.ON THEY’RE SOLD TO THE COMMUNITY, AT GOOD PRICES. AND TENTOFIMES FREE TO THOSE GOING THROUGH CRISIS, LIKE A FIRE. THE ITEMS THAT AREN’T SALAE,BL THEY ARE SOLD TO A THIRD-PTYAR EXPORTER TO RAISE EVEN MORE MONEY. >> IT GOES TO HAITI OR AFRICA OR IN DIA WHERE ITS USED THERE. THIS IS JUST A WAY OF RECOUPING SOME OF THOSE EXPENSES THAT WE PUT INTO THE TRUCK. AND THE EMPLYEES THAT WENT TO PICK IT UP. KELLY: AS MUCH AS THE THFTRI STORES BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY, IT’S ACTUALLYNOT THE SALVATION ARMY’S CORE MSIISON. IT’S WHAT FUNDS THE MISSION. >> WE’RE A RESIDENTIAL CHURCH ACTUALLY. KELLY: THIS SAME BUILDING,S I HOME TO A FEW DOZEN PEOPLE AT A TIME, WHO TAKE PART IN A 6-MONTH PROGRAM. OFTEN TIMES, THEY’RE STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION, OR SOCL ISSUES. OVER THEIR WEEKS AT THE SALVATION ARMY, THEY LEARNHE T GOSPEL. HOMEMAKING SKILLS. JOB SKILLS. AND SOBRIETY. IT PAYS OFF FOR MANY, GIVING THEM A NEW LIFE. INCLUDING MAJOR MARK, O GRADUATED FROM THE PROGRAM 29 YEARS AGO. >> ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS THAT I GET TO SEE IS WNHE FAMILIES GET THEIR FATHERSK. B FOR ME IT WAS MY PARENTS WHO GOT THEIR SON BACK. AND THAT’S WHAT WE DO. THD THAT’S WHAT WE DO. AT’S WHAT ALL THESE STORES AND ALL THESE YELLOW PINS ARE REALLY FOR, IS TO HELP PEOPLE GIVE THEIR LIVES BACK. KELLY: PERHAPS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON DONATION BINS YOU’LL SEE IN OUR REGION, IS THIS ONE. THE YELLOW PLANET AIBOD THERE ARE OVER 1,000N PITTSBURGH ALONE, THAT COLLECT 8 MILLION POUNDS OF CLOTHING AND SHOES ANNUAL. THEY EMPLOY 20 PEOPLE TO DRIVE TRUCKS, AND PACK UP THE DONATIONS, IN THEIR NOHRT HUNTINGDON WAREHOUSE. FOM THERE, ALL OF THE CLOTHING IS SHIPPED OVERSEAS, PRIMAIRLY TO CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA. THAT MONEY GOES TO VARIOUS COMMUNITY AND EDUCATIOLNA PROGRAMS OVERSEAS. AND FINALLY, WE HAVE GOODWILL BINS AROUND TO.WN ALL THE DONATIONS THERE STAY LOCAL. THE CLOTHES AND SHOES, GO TO AREA GOODWILL STORES. THE MONEY RAISED AT THE STORES, BENEFITS EMPLOYMENT PLACEMENT AND JOB-TRAINING PROGRAMS. ESPECIALLY FOR THE MORE VULNERABLE POPULATION, INCLUDING THE DISABLED AND SENIOR CITIZENS IN THE AREA. IF YOU’RE UNSURE ABOUT A BOX YOU SEE, LOOK FOR WHAT’S WRITTEN ON .IT THEN LOOK UP THE ORGANIZATION AND MAKE SURE IT IS THE ONE YOU WANT TO DONATE TO. GOOD QUESTION, BUT IAN C LOOK INTO THAT FOR YOU. IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION YOU WANT ME TANO SWER FOR Y,OU LET ME KNOW, YOU CAN LEAVE ME A VOICE OF -- VOICEMAIL AT THE NUMBER YOU SEE
