Get to know Penguins first-round draft pick Owen Pickering

With the 21st overall pick in the NHL Draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins selected Owen Pickering.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have had three first-round draft picks since 2014. With the 21st overall pick this year, the Penguins selected defenseman Owen Pickering. So who is Owen Pickering? WTAE Sports Anchor/Reporter Emily Giangreco sat down with the newest Penguin and got to know a little more about the 6-foot-4 hockey player from Canada. Q: How did you get into hockey? A: I think that's kind of a natural thing for a Canadian kid. I was 3-4 years old, kind of like every kid in my small town, we put on skates and got thrown on the ice so I'm pretty natural. My dad made a backyard rink with 2x4s for the last 10 years so I spent a lot of time on that.Q: Aside from hockey, did you play any other sports?A: Oh yeah, I played everything. Where I'm from it's kind of like hockey in the winter, baseball in the summer. I was lucky enough, I went to nationals for baseball and then in school, I played everything. I could start listing, badminton, I played some tennis, curling, basketball, volleyball, I think I played some squash a little bit. I played soccer but I'm not good at soccer. That's the one thing I'm just not good at but everything else I like to think I'm not bad.Q: Do you have any hidden talents?A: I can speak French fluently and I can play the violin. Q: When did you start playing the violin?A: When I was seven years old, there's an orchestra on TV and my parents are big on music so I was air-violining at the TV and that made their decision for them, I guess, so I played the violin and then both my younger siblings played piano so I got the better instrument of the two.Q: Did you bring the violin to Pittsburgh?A: No, I did not. I keep it secret for some reason so the guys on my team didn't know, so the secret's out now because they've done a bunch of stuff on it so the group chat, a bunch of texts are saying, "guess who's playing the violin for the guys next year?" and my response is, "I think I'm going to conveniently forget it in my home town so I think I'm going to stay away from playing it in front of the guys and I did not bring it here."Q: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring?A: My phone, because the guys say I'm on my phone all the time. Granola bars, probably. This is bad. People are probably going to be ripping this answer for sure. My phone, granola bars and just a ton of water. A lot of water. I think I'd need some water.Q: Who is your favorite musician?A: Eric Church.Q: Favorite athlete?A: Ever? Kris Letang.Q: Favorite animal?A: Penguin
