HYRODGEN POWERED MANUFACTURING PLANTS IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS. >> WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA HAS LONG BEEN AN ENERGY PIONEER. THE WORLDS FIRST OIL WELLS RIGHT HERE. MUCH OF THE COAL TO MOVE STEAM ENGINES HEAT HOMES AND TURN THE LIGHTS ON HERE. WHAT SOME CALL A GEOLOGICAL JACKPOT OF NATURAL GAS IN THE MARCELLUS SHALE HERE. SOME CLIMATE ACTIVISTS WANT OUR ENERGY NEEDS TO BE MET WITH ALL RENEWABLE RESOURCES, WIND, HYDRO, SOLAR LIKE YESTERDAY. PRESIDENT BIDEN AND GOVERNOR WOLF SAY THATD BE GREAT BUT ITS NOT REALISTIC. THE CEO OF THE ALLEGHENY CONFERENCE ON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TOLD ME ABOUT HER GROUP’S PLAN TO SOLVE THE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION PROBLEM WHILE KEEPING AND GROWING PITTSBURGH AREA JOBS. PART OF THAT PLAN A HYDROGEN HUB. SOMETHING PAS GOVERNOR TOLD STEFANI PASHMAN HES ACTIVELY PURSUING. >> SOUTHWESTERN PA IS RIPE FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY I AM HERE TO SUPPORT YOU WE WANT TO WORK ON THIS APPLICATION WITH YOU WE NEED TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN WE NEED -- I AM HERE TO SUPPORT YOU, WE WANT TO WORK ON THIS APPLICATION WITH YOU, WE NEED TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN, WE NEED A HYDROGEN HUB HERE IN THIS REGION IN SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA. >> A HYDROGEN HUB IS DESIGNED TO DO TWO THINGS NUMBER ONE CHEMICALLY STRIP AWAY THE DANGEROUS C.O.-2 FROM NATURAL GAS AND SEQUESTER OR STORE THAT C.O.-2 DEEP UNDER THE GROUND FOREVER. >> AND THEN WE EXTRACT THE CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THAT. WE THEN PUMP IT TO A LOCATION WHICH IS SUITABLE AND THEN WE INJECT IT DEEP DEEP INTO THE EARTH AND WHEN I MEAN DEEP ITS MORE THAN A MILE DEEP. COULD BE A MILE OR TWO MILES. >> ITS PUMPED INTO POROUS ROCK. >> ONCE ITS IN THAT POROUS LATER IT CAN SIT JUST LIKE THE OIL THAT WE USED TO TAKE OUT OF THE GROUND SAT IN THIS SORT OF POROUS LAYER BUT ITS ALSO TRAPPED. BECAUSE ABOVE THAT POROUS LAYER THERE YOU HAVE IMPERVIOUS LAYERS SO IT CANT ACTUALLY COME BACK OUT AGAIN. >> SO STEP ONE IS BURYING THAT C.O.-2 DEEP UNDERGROUND. STEP TWO IS HARVESTING THE LEFTOVERS OF THAT NATURAL GAS ONCE THE POLLUTING C.O.-2 IS STRIPPED AWAY. THOSE LEFTOVERS JUST HYDROGEN NOW. SOMETHING HILARY MERCER CALLS AN EXCELLENT ENERGY SOURCE. SHE IS SHALL PASS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT IN CHARGE OF THE BEAVER COUNTY METHANE CRACKER PLANT WHO STARTED HER CAREER AS A SCIENTIST. THE ONLY BY-PRODUCT WHEN YOU USE HYDROGEN TO MAKE ENERGY WATER. -- IS WATER. ALL THIS SCIENCE HAS MERCERS ATTENTION. SHE KNOWS HER COMPANYS PETRO-CHEMICAL CRACKER PLANT IN BEAVER COUNTY CREATES POLLUTION. SHE LOOKS FORWARD TO THE DAY SHELL SEQUESTERS ITS C.O.-2 POLLUTION UNDER THE GROUND. THIS SCIENCE HAS THE ATTENTION OF U.S. STEEL AS WELL. THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT SAYS U.S. STEELS CLAIRTON COKE WORKS AND MON VALLEY WORKS ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST SOURCES OF POLLUTION IN OUR REGION. WHAT IF U.S. STEEL USED HYDROGEN TO MAKE STEEL? REMEMBER OUR SCIENCE LESSON THE BY-PRODUCT OF HYDROGEN ENERGY ? H-2-0. >> WE NEED PARTNERS ON THE CORPORATE SIDE, THE INDUSTRIAL SIDE, WE NEED PARTNERS WHO KNOW HOW TO THINK ABOUT PUBLIC POLICY CHANGES THAT ARE NEEDED AND WE NEED PARTNERS WHO ARE GOING TO HELP US UNDERSTAND HOW THIS WILL AFFECT PEOPLE AND JOBS ON THE GROUND. THIS IS AN ALL IN PLAY IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE RESULTS WE NEED TO. >> THE RESULT SHE SAYS PITTSBURGH NEEDS ADD HYDROGEN AS THE LATEST HOMEGROWN ENERGY SOURCE WHILE LOOKING EVEN FURTHER INTO THE FUTURE TO WHATS NEXT. >> U.S. STEEL AND THE SHELL CORPORATION JOINED INTO PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ALLEGHENY CONFERENCE. THEY ALL SAY THEYRE WORKING TO MAKE PITTSBURGH AS ATTRACTIVE AS POSSIBLE TO WIN ONE OF THOSE FOUR HYDROGEN HUBS. THE ALLEGHENY CONFERENCE PUT TOGETHER A REPORT LISTING SEVEN LEVERS TO REACH THE TWIN GOALS OF SAVING THE PLANET AND SAVING THE ECONOMY. ONE LEADER IS ELECTRIFYING TRANSPORTATION. THEY SAY IF 800,000 OF OUR REGION’S PASSENGER VEHICLES ARE ELECTRIC BY 2050 THAT WOULD EQUAL TEN% DROP IN TOTAL EMISSIONS. THE CONFERENCE SAYS DEVELOPING LOW CARBON ENERGY AND GRID IMPROVEMENTS ADDING 50 SQUARE MILES OF SOLAR FOR POWER COMPANIES TO PRODUCE AND SELL ELECTRICITY, CONTINUING THE OPERATION OF THE BEAVER NUCLEAR POWER PLANT AND HERES A TOUGH ONE, RETIRING COAL BY 2035. THAT WOULD REDUCE TOTAL EMISSIONS IN OUR AREA BY ONE THIRD. YOU CAN READ THEIR ENTIRE REPO
