Woman shares her story after turning to North Hills food pantry
Elayne Masters is thanking the people of the 's food pantry.
Several years ago, they were there when Masters suffered a number of setbacks. Her mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness and her business took a downturn.
Then, she suffered a traumatic brain injury after a fall down the stairs.
Masters turned to the NHCO for help and that's exactly what they did.
The food pantry helped Masters by providing fresh vegetables when she wanted to find the right diet to help her prevent a need for extra medication for a thyroid issue.
“After six months on this diet, I was able to bring my thyroid numbers down enough that my doctor did not have to up my medication,” Masters said. “I've got better health all around. I feel better eating much more healthily.”
Masters is sending a message to others who may need help from local food pantries and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
“Don't be embarrassed,” she said, “You can give back. You'll find a way to give back, but don't be ashamed to put your hand out when you need help. That's what community is for.”
