Wolf said this investment started with $1.9 billion over the past seven years.

“That wasn’t enough to give our students and our communities, our schools, the resources they needed to make sure that we have the future that we all needed,” Wolf said.

This year’s budget alone almost matched that with $1.8 billion.

“The new funding formula that is now in place will mean, as oftentimes is said, every ZIP code will have the same option and opportunity,” state Rep. Robert Matzie said.

The Aliquippa School District, for example, will see a 14.25% increase in-state funding just this year, Wolf said.

Aliquippa’s curriculum coordinator and longtime educator, Beth Smith, spoke directly to the students in the room.

“Every dollar that comes into this district, we are focused on improving things for you folks so that you have the best advantages as you move forward on your young paths and your careers and whatever goals you set for yourselves,” Smith said.

This year’s addition of $1.8 billion means, on average, schools will see an 8% increase in state funding, with $100 million going toward special education.

Wolf said there’s still a long way to go before public education in Pennsylvania is fully and fairly funded.

“We still have a long way to go before every kid in every ZIP code and every school gets the education we need them to get,” Wolf said.

The administration also invested more than $130 million in toward grants to improve safety and security of schools.
