HAPPENING WHEN A LOT OF ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE CITY’S HOMELESS CRISIS. AS A RESULT SMITHFIELD UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST IS OPENING TONIGHT TO EASE SOME OF THE BURDEN. BASICALLY WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT IS AVAILABILITY AT THE CHURCH IS HAPPENING AS SNOW STARTED FALLING IN THE AREA. THESE ARE HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS ON THE NORTH SHORE AS THE WEATHER WORSENED THIS AFTERNOON. HOWEVER, SHELTER AT SMITHFIELD UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST IS ONLY TEMPORARY AS THE SECOND AVENUE COMMONS PREPARES TO OPEN. HERE ARE SOME OF THE DETAILS. THE CHURCH WILL ACCOMMODATE 50 MEN AND 20 WOMEN. IT OPENS AT 7:00 THIS EVENING. MEANWHILE, THE SECOND AVENUE COMMONS IS AWAITING OCCUPANCY PERMITS AND INSPECTIONS. LIGHT OF LIGHT RESCUE MISSION SAYS EVERY SHELTER SERVES A CRITICAL ROLE. Just as the weather turns cold and wet, Allegheny County's Department of Human Services announced that Smithfield United Church of Christ will open on a temporary basis as a homeless shelter.This measure serves as an alternative shelter while the Second Avenue Commons prepares to open within days. A spokesperson says the facility is awaiting an occupancy permit and inspections.In the meantime, the DHS says the church will accommodate 50 men and 20 women, opening at 7 p.m.
