Rodney Gallagher is headed to West Virginia University on a football scholarship as a four-star recruit.
Along with his celebrated athletic achievements at Laurel Highlands High School are his contributions to the community by engaging with younger students in the school district.
"It could be just anything in the community, like going to an elementary school and just talking to them. The mental part or the sports part, it doesn't matter," Gallagher said.
That is one reason why he signed a name, image and likeness deal with The Pavement Group in Wexford; their connection is that the owner of the company is also from the same school district and knows of Gallagher's community involvement.
"He's an amazing athlete and an even better person. That's what drew us to Rodney in the first place," says Brian Hess, owner of The Pavement Group. "Just how he carries himself and how he's impacted the children in Fayette County."
A final NIL policy for high school student-athletes was approved by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association on Wednesday. It allows student-athletes to obtain commercial endorsements and earn money from promotional activities, including a social media presence.
On the business side, Gallagher possesses a strong belief that scholastic and collegiate athletes have the right to earn income from their name, image and likeness.
"I think you should definitely get paid off of it, like jersey sales, or just any type of stuff in the team store. Obviously, players are becoming very wealthy off of it and there are a lot of players out there who are doing a great job of handling it," Gallagher said.
Gallagher says he will study sports management at WVU next fall.
