A city spokesperson says officials have worked to house those who had been staying there

City public works crews started to place fencing around a homeless encampment on Stockton Avenue on Wednesday morning, after officials recently posted signs saying camping is not permitted there.Ahead of the 9 a.m. start time, a few people who had been staying there were packing up their belongings. One man, who did not want to go on camera and said he had lived there for a year, expressed frustration with the city's actions."We're doing our best to handle this with respect, as much as we can," said Maria Montañ0, spokesperson for Mayor Ed Gainey's office.Montañ0 said for several weeks, the city had been working on transition plans for people at Stockton Avenue.In the past few days, roughly 35 people had been housed at Second Avenue Commons, a new shelter that can house 135 people in the winter. Officials are working on finding housing for another 10 individuals."There were some broader safety and public health concerns surrounding this encampment," Montañ0 said, including drug activity. Signs posted in the area read the city would be storing belongings found at the site for six months. To claim those belongings, people can call 311.
