The Terrible Towel, a WTAE creation, celebrates 47th anniversary

Forty-seven years ago Tuesday, a Pittsburgh tradition was born at the former WTAE Radio studio.Sports broadcaster Myron Cope invented the Terrible Towel in 1975 ahead of a Dec. 27 playoff game between the Steelers and the Baltimore Colts. Cope invited fans to bring any black and gold towels they had, even dish towels, to Three Rivers Stadium to cheer on the Steelers.For someone who insisted he wasn't a "gimmick guy," Cope ended up creating a tradition with the Towel that teams across the country envy. Now, sales from the Terrible Towel go toward funding the Merakey Allegheny Valley School.
