As fans and players rally around Damar Hamlin after he suffered a cardiac arrest on national television Monday night, many are showing their support in a donation to his charity fundraiser.Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 talked with one of the top donors, Jason Hanold. He donated $20,000 to the cause.“The amount is less relevant to us because whether it's people giving $5 or $10, we are all on it at the same level, at generosity, at heart and wanting to do something when there is really nothing we can do,” Hanold said. Hamlin's GoFundMe was initially created to support a hometown toy drive in the McKees Rocks community in December of 2020, sponsored by the Chasing M’s Foundation. Hamlin’s goal was to raise $2,500. Fast forward to today, more than $6 million has been raised.People from all over the world are chipping in, like AJ Shear from Rochester, New York. “I think it also shows that people, that for many people, this touched people in a really unique way. This is more than a sport. This is really just such a tragic thing that happened and I think that so many of us can relate to that. And have had tragedy in our own lives and whether it’s in Germany or anywhere, it’s something that we can all relate to and it’s something if you can help, you want to do it,” Shear said.Some of the biggest and most recognizable donors include Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay, New England Patriots Owner Robert Kraft, Los Angeles Rams Quarterback Matthew Stafford, Tampa Bay Bucs Quarterback Tom Brady, and Olympian Michael Phelps.“To me, this is just a great example of how people want to come together and help where we are basically helpless, he is such an incredible role model, and frankly, I look for men like that all around to point to my sons and say listen, this is a person you ought to follow. This is a person you ought to aspire to be more like, and Damar is certainly one of those folks, even though we didn't have in depth knowledge about who he was before this, but his story is so compelling and admirable,” Hanold said.To donate, click here.
