THEY USED TO CALL IT THE VICE PRESIDENT OF PENNSYLVANIA. HE’S MAKING HISTORY AS THE FIRST BLACK AND YOUNGEST LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR EVER, THOUGH THE TEN GOVERNOR PRESIDES IN THE SENATE AND IS FIRST IN LINE FOR SUCCESSION TO THE GOVERNOR SHOULD SOMETHING HAPPEN. WELL, I’M BLESSED WITH THIS AWESOME OPPORTUNITY AND RESPONSIBLE ABILITY. IT WAS PAID FOR BY THE BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS OF THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE ME. PEOPLE LIKE SPEAKER KELLY ROY SERVICE, PEOPLE LIKE CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERT NICKS AND COUNTLESS ACTIVISTS AND CONCERN CITIZENS WHOSE NAMES MAY NOT SHOW UP IN PRINT. BUT WE’RE JUST AS IMPORTANT TO OUR COMMONWEALTH TRAJECTORY. THEY PAVED THE WAY FOR THIS MOMENT. DAVIS, THREE YEARS OLD. YOU HAVE TO BE 30 TO BE THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OR GOVERNOR. SO HE’S BARELY MAKING IT BY A COUPLE OF YEARS. BUT THE REVEREND WHO OFFERED THE INVOCATION FOR THE SWEARING AND THE JUDGE WHO SWORE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR DAVIS IN, RECOGNIZE THE SIGNIFICA ANCE OF HIM BEING THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN TO HOLD THAT OFFICE. HE’S THE SON OF A BUS DRIVER AND A HAIRDRESSER. HE SAID HIS GRANDPARENTS MOVED FROM THE SOUTH TO PENNSYLVANIA AND HE DIDN’T THINK IN THEIR WILDEST DREAMS THEY WOULD EVER HAVE IMAGINED THAT HE WOULD BE SECOND IN LINE TO THE GOVERNOR. OH, AND HE WON OVER IN A SPECIAL ELECTION. A PRETTY TOUGH DISTRICT FULL OF REPUBLICANS. SO A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK THIS GUY HAS A LOT GOING ON. THEY ELECTED HIM TO THE STATE HOUSE WHERE HE’S NOT SERVED FOR VERY LONG. AGAIN, HE’S SO YOUNG. AND OF COURSE, NOW TODAY, ALL THE FESTIVIT

Austin Davis made history on Tuesday, becoming Pennsylvania's first black lieutenant governor. Davis previously served as a state representative for the 35th legislative district. The McKeesport native resigned his House seat in late 2022, ahead of the inauguration. Davis, 33, served in the legislature representing McKeesport and other nearby municipalities along the Monongahela River in the state House of Representatives. He has connections to Allegheny County’s party leaders, having been an assistant to Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.Davis was also a member of the Legislative Black Caucus.Watch Davis' swearing-in in the video player above.
