Pa. lawmaker proposing 'Damar's Law;' would require AEDs at all school sporting events
THAT’S WHY HE WANTS TO DEMAND THAT EVERY SCHOOL IS EQUIPPED. >> I’M LOOKING TO MANDATE THEM. THEREFORE, IF YOUR SCHOOL HAS SPORTS, YOU WILL ESSENTIALLY HAVE TO HAVE AN AED IN YOUR SCHOOL. MIKE: HE SAYS WHILE SOME SCHOOL DISTRICTS ALREADY HAVE THESE DEVICES HIS BILL CALLED DAMAR’S , LAW WOULD REQUIRE EVERY SCHOOL IN EVERY DISTRICT TO HAVE THEM AT ALL COMPETITIONS. AND ALTHOUGH THESE DEVICES CAN COST BETWEEN $2000 TO $3000 OR MORE APIECE, UNDER CURRENT PENNSYLVANIA LAW, SCHOOLS RECEIVE A STEEP DISCOUNT AND CAN BUY THEM FOR LESS THAN $1000 A UNIT. WHEN I ASKED HOW ADMINISTRATORS AND SCHOOL BOARDS WOULD REACT TO ANOTHER UNFUNDED MANDATE FROM HARRISBURG, PLUS THE TRAINING AND LIABILITY INSURANCE COSTS THAT WOULD COME WITH THIS LAW, HE SAID HE’S CONFIDENT THE MONEY CAN BE FOUND TO SAVE LIVES. >> I THINK THE PRICE OF NOT HAVING ONE COMPARED TO HAVING ONE, ONE IN 50,000, ONE IN 80,000 PEOPLE THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO AND TO NOT BE PREPARED YOU KNOW, IT’S IRRESPONSIBLE AS A LEGISLATOR, A PARENT, COACH, A SUPERINTENDENT. WHATEVER WE HAVE TO DO WE’RE GOING TO DO THAT. MIKE: WHO WOULD OPERATE THESE DEVICES? SENATOR FLYNN SAID HE’D LIKE TO SEE THE PEOPLE CLOSEST TO THE STUDENT ATHLETES, COACHES AND TRAINERS, AND EVEN EMS CREWS WHO ARE ALREADY AT MANY OF THESE SPORTING EVENTS, THEY ARE TRAINED. FLYNN SAID HE HAD BIPARTISAN SUPPORT FOR THIS BILL AND SAYS SINCE DAMAR HAMLIN RECOVERY HA
