Aquinas Academy senior moves past Tom Pipkins into first place on all-time scoring list

Western Pennsylvania basketball has a new all-time scoring champion.Aquinas Academy senior Vinnie Cugini moved into the top spot on the WPIAL boys' basketball list during a game against Neighborhood Academy on Tuesday evening.Cugini eclipsed the total of 2,838 career points scored by Tom Pipkins at Valley High School, a record that had stood since 1993. He came into the game needing 31 points to break the record."I'm more emotional than I thought," Cugini told reporters after the game. "But it's great. It's a great feeling. I'm just super proud of myself if I'm going to be completely honest with you."Cugini, who finished with 33 points in the loss to Neighborhood, set the record with a little more than two minutes left in the game. In honor of the accomplishment, officials paused the game and Cugini's parents came on the floor to hug him."I cried," Brandi Cugini, Vinnie's mother, said. "I 100 percent felt it for him."Vince Cugini, Vinnie's father, said the accomplishment is a testament to his son's skills and character."This shows how Vinnie plays and how he scores," Vince said. "He's not 6'5. He's lightning fast, but he earns every point by working and he's the hardest worker. He's one of the hardest workers I've ever seen or known."Cugini has averaged 46 points this season. The Crusaders have four games left on their schedule, plus any potential playoff contests, so Cugini will likely add plenty of points to his scoring record in the coming days."I wish would've ended a little bit differently," Cugini said. "But it's just something I'm never gonna forget."Pipkins will be inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame in June.
