Banana Boat sunscreen recall expanded
Edgewell Personal Care Company has expanded a voluntary nationwide recall of three batches of Banana Boat hair & scalp sunscreen over concerns about the product containing trace levels of benzene. The original recall was announced on July 29, 2022. The expansion includes an additional batch of sunscreen, according to a company news release shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.Watch the video above for more information on the original recall.The types of sunscreen included in the recall are 6 oz. aerosol cans of the Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Spray with expiration dates in December 2022, February 2023, September 2023 and April 2024. The recalled products were sold at various retailers nationwide and online."While benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat products, the review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can," the company's news release said. "Importantly, no other batches of Hair & Scalp (either before or after these batch codes) and no other Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended." Exposure to benzene, classified as a human carcinogen, can occur through inhalation, orally or through the skin and can lead to cancers including leukemia, blood cancers of bone marrow and life-threatening blood disorders. The company has not received any reports of adverse events related to the recall. "Daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences according to an independent health assessment using established exposure modeling guidelines," the company's news release says.Edgewell has notified its retailers to remove any remaining recalled product from shelves and Banana Boat is offering reimbursement for consumers who have purchased one of the recalled products.For questions about the recall, contact Edgewell Personal Care at 1-888-686-3988 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.
