A train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, has now forced many families to leave their homes.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine issued an urgent evacuation notice Sunday night after a "drastic change in temperature" in one of the rail cars. The release states that it could lead to "catastrophic tanker failure," leading to an explosion that could send deadly shrapnel as far as one mile.
"I'm a veteran, I've faced a lot of things, but this is for real," said Roger Walker, who has spent the last three nights in the evacuation shelter. "This is a threat to everybody, especially the brave first responders that's dealing with this down there at the site."
Marcy Beers grew up in East Palestine. She said she lives just outside of the one-mile radius evacuation zone; however, she can't get in or out of the city.
"I stopped inside (the evacuation shelter) to try to get pull-ups for my grandson because we ran out and we couldn't get out of town," said Beers. "They have it blocked completely now that you can't get out of town. It's scary. It's very scary because you have no idea what's going to happen."
East Palestine High School is being used as an evacuation shelter for anyone in need.
Anyone in need of food or hotels is encouraged to visit the Norfolk Family Assistance Center. The center is providing reimbursement and, in some cases, money for evacuees. The center is located at Abundant Life Fellowship Church, 46469 OH-46, New Waterford, OH 44445.
