THE PICKET LINE. A COUPLE DOZEN TEACHERS STARTED PICKETING THIS MORNING ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE SCHOOL’S THE FIRST DAY OF THIS STRIKE AFTER THEY’VE BEEN WORKING WITHOUT A CONTRACT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. BUNDLED UP IN SIGNS IN HAND, TEACHERS FOR THE PENS MANOR AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT SAY THEY’RE FIGHTING TO KEEP THEIR CURRENT BENEFITS. OUR MEMBERS DO NOT WANT TO BE ON THE PICKET LINE. WE WANT TO BE IN THE CLASSROOM. WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO BE IN SCHOOL. BUT THE SCHOOLS WILL SIT EMPTY FOR NOW. THE STATE DETERMINES HOW LONG THE TEACHERS CAN BE OUT. ROUGHLY TWO WEEKS, WE’RE TOLD. ONE OF THE BIG ISSUES IS THE TWO SIDES ARE BATTLING OVER HEALTH CARE. THE UNION REPRESENTATIVE WE SPOKE WITH SAYS THE DISTRICT IS PUSHING TO EXCLUDE SPOUSES FROM HEALTH CARE PLANS. THAT’S SOMETHING THAT’S NOT ACCEPTABLE TO OUR MEMBERS BECAUSE WHERE DOES IT STOP? THAT OPENS THE DOOR TO THEN SAYING THERE’S NO MORE COVERAGE FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN. IT’S INDIVIDUAL ONLY. SO THIS IS NOT NOT A RISK WE CAN TAKE. IN A STATEMENT OVER THE WEEKEND AHEAD OF THE STRIKE, THE DISTRICT WROTE THAT ITS HEALTH CARE COSTS INCREASED NEARLY 13% IN 2020 TO. Teachers in the Penns Manor Area School District in Clymer went on strike Monday, after months of contract negotiations with the district. Students in the district are not in class as long as the strike is happening. The state determines how long teachers can strike. "Our members do not want to be on the picket line," said Annie Briscoe, with the Pennsylvania State Education Association, which represents the teachers. "We want to be in the classroom. We want students to be in school."Teachers have been working without a contract since July 31, 2022. One of the big issues the two sides are trying to work out is health care. The union describes a situation where the district is attempting to remove spouses from health care plans."That's something that's not acceptable to our members because where does it stop?" Briscoe said. "That opens the door to then saying, 'There's no more coverage for your children.
