Former Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett was back on the mound at PNC Park where he threw out the first pitch at the 2023 home opener.
Pittsburgh's Action Sports saw Burnett catching up with Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen on the field near the batting cage before Friday's game.
When asked about this year's team, Burnett said that he hopes the "young guys" pick up from what the veteran players do: "They were good before, so if you add the right pieces, then you get better."
Burnett threw the ceremonial pitch to Russell Martin. They were teammates in 2013, when the Pirates ended a streak of 20 losing seasons and advanced to the National League Division Series.
McCutchen, another star on that 2013 team, is also making his return at the home opener. He signed a one-year contract with the Pirates for the 2023 season.
