YOU’LL REMEMBER THAT WAS THE SAME DAY OF THE CONTROLLED RELEASE, WHICH PROMPTED CONCERNS ABOUT TOXINS IN THE AIR AND WATER. IT LOOKS LIKE A BOMB WENT OFF. THAT LOOKS LIKE THE HIROSHIMA BOMB. YOU SAW IT FROM OVER HERE, WHICH IS WHY THEY EVACUATED THIS HIGH SCHOOL, BECAUSE THE WINDS WERE BRINGING IT. ALL RIGHT. SO, I MEAN, THIS IS JUST AN ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER OF THE FIRST PORTION. THE US EPA HAS RECENTLY ORDERED NORFOLK SOUTHERN TO TEST FOR DIOXIN, ITS PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS THAT TAKE A LONG TIME TO BREAK DOWN IN THE ENVIRONMENT. THAT DECISION CAME AFTER WEEKS OF PUBLIC PRESSURE BY RESIDENTS, ACTIVISTS AND SCIENTISTS. IF YOU’RE NOT BRINGING AWARENESS TO IT, IF YOU’RE NOT SAYING THAT YOU CARE ABOUT IT, IF YOU’RE NOT BRINGING THIS ATTENTION TO IT, SADLY, WE GET FORGOTTEN HERE. A coalition of lawyers and medical and scientific experts held an educational seminar in Beaver County Wednesday night, in an effort to provide information to surrounding communities that have been impacted by last month's train derailment in East Palestine.East Palestine Justice organized the event at Blackhawk High School, which had early dismissal Monday, Feb. 6, the day of the controlled release of toxic chemicals."It looks like a bomb went off," Mikal Watts, a prominent Texas lawyer, said during his presentation, pointing to a picture of a plume of black smoke. "You saw it from over here, which is why they evacuated this high school."Watts guided residents through a slideshow presentation that Pittsburgh's Action News 4 first saw during a town hall with Erin Brockovich in East Palestine last month.While the seats in the auditorium may have been filled by different people Wednesday, the fears were of a similar variety."I'm afraid," said Carole Eckman, a Beaver County resident who lives within 10 miles of the derailment site. "I'm a widow. I have well water. I hear all the stuff that's going on, and I just want to find out what's really happening."Eckman said she has been giving her pets filtered water.Among the others in attendance Wednesday night was Bernie Kosar, the former Cleveland Browns quarterback who attended the first town hall hosted by East Palestine Justice."For the people here in northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania, you're not going to be forgotten," Kosar told Pittsburgh's Action News 4. "We're going to help to try to figure this out."
