Chronicle: Lessons for the future after East Palestine disaster
AS FAMILIES WHO LIVE NEAR THE EAST PALESTINE DERAILMENT LOOK FORWARD TO THE FUTURE. MANY HAVE TURNED TO ATTORNEYS AND JOINED CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS. OTHERS ARE GETTING HELP FROM A WELL-KNOWN CALIFORNIA ACTIVIST. YOU’LL LIKELY RECOGNIZE HER NAME FROM A MOVIE CHRONICLE. MET WITH ERIN BROCKOVICH IN EAST PALESTINE, WHERE SHE’S BEEN PUSHING FOR CHANGE AND ENCOURAGE ING ALL OF US TO LEARN SOMETHING FROM WHAT’S UNFOLDED SINCE FEBRUARY 3RD. THERE’S TWO THINGS THAT AGGRAVATE ME, MR. MASRI. BEING IGNORED AND BEING LIED TO DECADES AFTER ACTRESS JULIA ROBERTS STARRED IN THE MOVIE ERIN BROCKOVICH. DON’T TALK TO ME LIKE I’M AN IDIOT, OKAY? I MAY NOT HAVE A LAW DEGREE, BUT I SPENT 18 MONTHS ON THIS CASE, AND I KNOW MORE ABOUT THESE PLAINTIFFS THAN YOU EVER WILL. ALL THE CITIZENS HERE OF EAST BALANCED NEED ANSWERS. THE ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS PORTRAYED IN THE MOVIE BEARING HER NAME ANSWERED A CALL FOR HELP FROM PEOPLE IN THE EAST PALESTINE AREA AFFECTED BY THE TRAIN DERAILMENT. IT’S MADDENING. IT’S IT’S MADDENING AT EVERY LEVEL. OFTENTIMES IN MY 30 YEARS OF WORKING, YOU COME INTO A COMMUNITY THAT’S REPORTING HEALTH ISSUES TO LEARN THAT, OH, MY GOSH, THEY’VE ALREADY BEEN EXPOSED BECAUSE SOMETHING WAS COVERED UP. AS THE OSCAR WINNING FILM HIGHLIGHTING HER WORK SHOWS BACK IN THE NINETIES, BROCKOVICH HELPED EXPOSE A GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION CASE IN CALIFORNIA, LEADING TO A HISTORIC. $333 MILLION DIRECT ACTION LAWSUIT. AGAINST PGE AND E A GAS AND ELECTRIC COMPANY RIGHT HERE IN OHIO. AND YOU, THE PEOPLE, WILL BE THE ONE THAT CAN MAKE THAT CHANGE. THAT MISSION TO FIND ANSWERS AND PUSH FOR JUSTICE LED THE PARALEGAL TO HELP FORM A TEAM CALLED EAST PALESTINE AND JUSTICE. IT’S MADE UP OF ATTORNEYS, A DOCTOR AND A WATER EXPERT TO TRY TO FIND ANSWERS FOR PEOPLE STRUGGLING WITH HEALTH ISSUES. PEOPLE JUST DON’T REALLY KNOW WHAT TO DO OR WHO TO BELIEVE ANYMORE. YOU KNOW, YOU’RE EVACUATED, YOU’RE BROUGHT BACK. DRINK THE WATER. DON’T DRINK THE WATER IS THERE SAFE? YES, IT’S SAFE. NOW YOU’RE GETTING TESTING THAT’S SHOWING IT’S NOT SAFE. THEY’RE NOT REMEDIATING IT PROPERLY. AND IT’S VERY FRUSTRATE FOR THESE COMMUNITIES. THE DAMAGE JUST HAPPENS. THE EXPOSURE HAS HAPPENED AT WHAT LEVEL? WE’LL FIND OUT OVER TIME. WE WON’T HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS TODAY. BUT HOW THEY NEED TO BE REALLY VIGILANT IS A HUGE AREA WHERE THIS CLOUD FELL OUT DUE TO THAT TOXIC CLOUD OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS. WELCOME TO THE TRIP WE RANCH. THE EVACUATIONS STRETCHED OVER THE STATE LINE ONTO THIS 90 ACRES OF PEACEFUL PROPERTY. I WANT TO GET SOME FURTHER THAT WAY IN DARLINGTON TOWNSHIP, BEAVER COUNTY. HEY, COME ON IN. HEY, BOY. SHERRI AND WADE ILER. WE NEVER THOUGHT WE’D HAVE TO EVACUATE. BEING OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE HERE. BUT WE HAD TO. IT WAS STRANGE. LIVE AND WORK ON THEIR HORSE RANCH THREE MILES AWAY FROM FEBRUARY’S TRAIN DERAILMENT. AT ABOUT $5, IT WAS OVER THE HILL AND IT WAS BIG, HUGE CLOUDS AND FLAMES. YOU COULD SEE FLAMES. AND THAT’S THREE MILES. I NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT I WAS THREE MILES AWAY. BUT IT WAS JUST DIRECTLY BEHIND THE BARN OVER THAT. WHAT YOU SEE, PALESTINE. MY WIFE HAD AN ASTHMA ATTACK THAT THE DAY THAT THE THAT HAPPENED IN THE FUTURE, SOMETHING LIKE HAPPENS IN YOUR TOWN OR ANY OTHER TOWN. THIS LET EVERYBODY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE TOXICOLOGY STUFF IS SO THEY CAN MAKE A DECISION SOONER. BELIEVE OR NOT. HAD THEY KNOWN SOONER, THEY WOULD HAVE EVACUATED THEIR HORSES, ESPECIALLY AFTER LEARNING SOME OF THEM NOW HAVE BREATHING ISSUES. WE HAD PLACES TO TAKE THEM OFF. BUT HERE THEY WOULDN’T LET THE TRAILERS COME THROUGH TO GET TO THEM. IT WAS TOUGH TO LEAVE THEM ALL. SOMETIMES THINK THAT THERE’S A A LITTLE BIT OF A FAILURE OF RISK COMMUNICATION IN THIS PARTICULAR SITUATION. AND ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOL LARGEST AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH EXPRESSES HIS CONCERN ABOUT INFORMATION BEING COMMUNICATED CLEARLY TO THE COMMUNITY AND THE WAKE OF THE DERAILMENT AND THE RELEASE OF THE TOXIC CHEMICALS INTO THE AIR. I’VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AT SOME OF THAT DATA THAT’S ON THE EPA WEB SITE. AND I CAN TELL YOU, FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, IT WOULD BE UNDIGESTED TO A COMMUNITY. I SEE NO REASON THAT THE EPA CAN’T HAVE A DAILY BRIEFING OR UPDATE IN PLAIN LANGUAGE FOR COMMUNITY PEOPLE AS TO WHAT THEY’RE MONITORING. SO WHAT THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY SAY AND WHAT WILL BE THE NEXT STEPS MOVING FORWARD. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE TO BE YOUR OWN BEST ADVOCATE AND DON’T BE AFRAID OF IT. DON’T BE AFRAID TO SAY, NOPE, NOPE, THAT’S NOT WHAT’S HAPPENING TO ME. I’M CONCERNED WHEN ASK QUESTIONS, SHOW UP T
