Fifty miles from Pittsburgh, the Indiana County plant is the largest in operation in the state. The power supplier is also a budget builder for Homer City and Center Township.
"It kills us. Not for this year, but probably for 2024 and beyond," Homer City borough manager Rob Nymick told Pittsburgh's Action News 4.
From school taxes to revenue for the water authority, Nymick said the power plant is one of the largest revenue generators for the area.
"We have some tough decisions to make going forward and see how we can recover from this," Nymick said. "Seems like we always do, but I don't know. I don't know how many more hits we can take."
The company says the decision comes after the latest federal emission limits were put in place imposing what they call an excessive economic and operations burden.
They say the decommissioning will happen over the course of 90 days and tiered layoffs will be put in place.
Pittsburgh's Action News 4 was told that 130 employees will be impacted by the closure.
“This is an unfortunate day for us at Homer City because we did everything possible to maintain our operations,” Homer City President and CEO William Wexler said in a statement. “Everyone at Homer City was committed to helping power our community and no one embodied that commitment more than our workers."
