Driver hospitalized after school bus crashes into West Mifflin home
HOURS TO SAFELY REMOVE THAT BUS. IT’S AN AFTERNOON. THE NEIGHBORS HERE ON HOMESTEAD, DUQUESNE ROAD IN WEST MIFFLIN WILL NOT FORGET FOR SOME TIME. A SCHOOL BUS APPARENTLY SWERVING OFF THE ROAD, HITTING THIS VAN. BUT NOT STOPPING THERE. WENT TO HOUSES DOWN, HIT ANOTHER CAR. AND THEN WHEN IT DID STOP, IT LEFT THAT HOLE IN A HOME. I HEARD THE IMPACT. I LOOKED UP AND THERE A SCHOOL BUS DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE AND MY VAN WAS SIDEWAYS. IT WAS IN THE GRASS HERE. FARMER COLLINS WILL NEED A NEW WAY TO GET AROUND. AFTER HIS VAN TOOK THE FIRST HIT FROM THIS BUS. THE CRASH PROMPTING A RESPONSE FROM FIREFIGHTERS, POLICE AND CODE ENFORCER AS TRAFFIC WAS RESTRICTED TO ONE LANE. IT LOOKED A LOT WORSE THAN WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS, BUT WHEN YOU’RE INSIDE THE HOUSE AND THERE’S A BUS INSIDE THE HOUSE, SO YOU DON’T SEE THAT EVERY DAY. THE GOOD NEWS, NO CHILDREN WERE ON THE BUS AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH AND THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE WERE UNTOUCHED. THE COUPLE THAT LIVES THERE, THEY WERE IN THAT HOUSE ON THEIR COUCH, 5 MINUTES PRIOR TO THAT BAR SETTING. AND ACTUALLY, THERE’S A CRUCIFIX HANGING ON THE WALL, STILL HANGING WHERE THE BUS HIT THE FIRE CHIEF AND NEIGHBORS SAY THE DRIVER WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. TONIGHT, THE WEST MIFFLIN AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT TELLS US SHE’S DOING ALL RIGHT. I SEEN HER GET OUT OF THE EMERGENCY DOOR. MY NEIGHBOR MIKE GOT ONE OF HIS LAWN CHAIRS. PUT IT OUT THERE FOR US SO SHE COULD SIT DOWN. SHE SMOKED A COUPLE OF CIGARETS, AND THEY PUT HER IN THE AMBULANCE. IT. AS CREWS WORK TO BOARD UP THIS HOME, WE’RE WORKING TO TRY TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HOW THIS HAPPENED. THE WEST MIFFLIN SUPERINTENDENT SAYS THE DISTRICT IS IN COMMUNICATION WITH THE TRANSPORTATION PROVIDER. REPORTING FROM WEST MI
