Editor's Note: The Department of Environmental Protection sent the following statement to WTAE Listens:
At the time DEP provided the statement, DEP didn’t have evidence of a release. Shell subsequently reported to the National Response Center (Incident number 1364790 on 4/14/23) a release of 300 pounds of benzene to the air from the wastewater treatment plant. DEP continues to have staff on-site investigating the incident and will have a continued presence monitoring and analyzing air quality. DEP will hold Shell accountable for any impacts to the environment.
