WTAE Editorial: The Life of Dick Groat
SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD. HE’S CHARLES W. WOLFERTZ III PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF A LEGEND ON THE BASEBALL FIELD AND THE BASKETBALL COURT. ON THURSDAY, PITTSBURGH GOT THE SAD NEWS THAT FORMER PIRATES SHORTSTOP -- GROAT HAD PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 92. THE WILKINSBURG NATIVE HAD BEEN REVERED FOR DECADES IN THE STEEL CITY AS A TWO SPORT ATHLETE WHO WENT FROM BASKETBALL TO BASEBALL AND LATER TO BROADCAST ACTING AS A PIT BASKETBALL ANNOUNCER. MR. GROAT WAS A PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL AND BASKETBALL PLAYER WHO WAS AN EIGHT TIME ALL STAR SHORTSTOP AND A TWO TIME WORLD SERIES CHAMPION. BUT DESPITE HIS STARDOM, -- GROAT CAME OFF TO SO MANY WHO MET AND KNEW HIM AS A REGULAR PITTSBURGH OWNER. EVEN ON OCCASIONS LIKE IN JUNE 2018, WHEN THE PITTSBURGH CITY COUNCIL HONORED HIM WITH -- GROAT DAY. WE BELIEVE -- GROATS LEGEND WILL LIVE ON IN PITTSBURGH. HE WAS RECENTLY NAMED TO THE 2023 CLASS OF THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES HALL OF FAME. AND ON THAT DAY IN AUGUST, WHEN THE CLASSES HONORED, WE’RE SURE PITTSBURGH WILL BE THERE TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THE MAN WHO MADE HIS HOMETOWN PROUD.
