WTAE Editorial: Pittsburgh gets new police chief
THIS IS A WTI EDITORIAL SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD IS CHARLES W. WOLFERTZ III PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF WTI. FINALLY, PITTSBURGH IS GETTING A NEW POLICE CHIEF. IT’S ABOUT TIME MAYOR ED GAINEY HAS KNOWN FOR MORE THAN A YEAR THAT HE WOULD NEED TO REPLACE SCOTT SCHUBERT AS CHIEF OF THE PITTSBURGH BUREAU OF POLICE. THE MAYOR SAID HE WANTED TO TAKE HIS TIME AND DO A NATIONAL SEARCH TO MAKE SURE HE FOUND THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE JOB. SO WE HIRED A SEARCH FIRM TO FIND CANDIDATES. THE PITTSBURGH CITY COUNCIL APPROVED SPENDING OF $80,000 TO DO THIS. BUT AS IT TURNS OUT, DESPITE ALL OF THAT TIME AND EXPENSE SEARCHING ACROSS THE NATION, TWO OF THE THREE CANDIDATES WERE KNOWN TO MAYOR GAINEY ALL ALONG. FREDERICK, MARYLAND POLICE CHIEF JASON LANDO SPENT TWO DECADES WORKING FOR PITTSBURGH POLICE AND FORMER FORT LAUDERDALE CHIEF LARRY SCOTTO WAS AN ASSISTANT POLICE CHIEF IN PITTSBURGH. GAINEY GAVE THE JOB TO SCOTTO EVEN THOUGH HE WAS FIRED FROM HIS FLORIDA JOB. WE BELIEVE THE MAYOR COULD HAVE AND SHOULD HAVE HIRED A NEW POLICE CHIEF MONTHS AGO. IT’S BEEN A VIOLENT TIME IN THE CITY, A TIME WHEN BUSINESSES ARE LEAVING DOWNTOWN OVER SAFETY CONCERNS. WE HOPE CHIEF CORRADO INTENDS TO GET TO WORK RIGHT AWAY. EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP IN THE CITY IS OVERDUE. WT
