A backyard business is bursting with flowers in the middle of a Pittsburgh neighborhood
2025. SOMETIMES I PINCH MYSELF THAT WE EVEN OWN AN URBAN FLOWER FARM. NEW THIS MORNING, A FLOWER FARM IN AN UNEXPECTED PLACE. WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORD FARM, YOU LIKELY PICTURE ACRES OF LAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COUNTRY WILL INSTEAD, THIS FARM IS AN URBAN FLOWER FARM. AS WE’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT. IT’S TUCKED INTO A TIGHT KNIT NEIGHBORHOOD IN PITTSBURGH THAT BEGAN AS A LABOR OF LOVE FOR TWO PITTSBURGH WOMEN. I DEFINITELY THINK WHEN PEOPLE HEAR URBAN FLOWER FARM, THEY’RE LIKE, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? THE WOMEN WHO OWN ARMFUL OF FLOWERS? THIS IS OUR GARDEN CENTER ON MOUNT WASHINGTON TRANSFORMED AN EMPTY CITY LOT. INTO A BACKYARD BUSINESS, BURSTING WITH BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS RIGHT BEHIND BINGHAM TAVERN. WHEN COVID HIT AND THE RESTAURANT WAS KIND OF AT A STANDSTILL AND WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO. ALL OF OUR WORLDS AND OUR BUSY LIVES KIND OF JUST SHUT DOWN AND STOPPED. WE TOOK COVID. AND JUST BIRTHED THIS BEAUTIFUL PLANT WHEN IT’S IN FULL BLOOM AND I’M TALKING WHEN THE FLOWERS ARE UP TO YOUR CHEST. I MEAN, IT’S JUST BEAUTIFUL OUT HERE. WE’RE A FULL SERVICE FLORIST. WE DO WEDDINGS AND EVENTS, PLUS WE RUN A FULL FARM AND A RETAIL SPACE. WE DO VENDOR MARKETS. WE’RE CONSTANTLY WORKING WITH OTHER BUSINESSES AND THINGS LIKE THAT. IN THE SUMMERTIME, THEY INVITE SHOPPERS TO BUILD THEIR OWN BOUQUETS AND LEARN HOW TO GROW THEIR OWN GARDENS. WE KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS CITY DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO A HUGE BACKYARD, BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN’T FARM OR, YOU KNOW, HAVE A HARVEST OF VEGETABLES OUT OF A POT OR PLANT. BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS, CERTAIN PLANTS AND FLOWERS NEED TO BEGIN TO GROW INDOORS UNDER A GROW LIGHT BEFORE MOVING OUTDOORS. DUE TO OUR PITTSBURGH CLIMATE THAT WE ALL KNOW CAN BE TRICKY AT TIMES. THROUGH A DELICATE AND DEDICATED APPROACH, THEIR VIRGINIA AVENUE GARDEN AND THEIR DREAMS KEEP GROWING. WE HONESTLY GO THROUGH PROBABLY ABOUT 40,000 DIFFERENT PLANTS A YEAR BETWEEN ROTATING CROPS AND PUTTING NEW ONES IN. WE HAVE A LOT OF ROOM IN SPACE IN THIS VERY TINY HALF ACRE. IT’S AMAZING HOW MUCH WE CAN ACTUALLY FIT IN THIS SMALL AREA, ALL OF OUR COMMUNITIES AND OUR CITIES, YOU KNOW, THERE’S SO MUCH DEVELOPMENT AND THERE’S SO MUCH BUILDING AND NEW TOWNHOMES POPPING UP. AND I JUST THINK IT’S A WELCOME BREATH OF FRESH AIR TO JUST SEE A LITTLE BIT OF NATURE TUCKED INTO THE CITY. THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN EVERY SINGLE SEASON. YEAH, IT’S REALLY PRETTY BECAUSE AS WE’RE GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER TO MOTHER’S DAY IN THE SUMMER, THOSE BLOOMS ARE JUST FILLED IN THE BACK. SO THIS IS A LITTLE PREVIEW OF WHAT’S TO COME FOR THE SUMMER. SO YOU REALLY GET A GREAT SENSE OF THEIR PASSION FOR IT. YEAH, GREAT STORY. YEAH. THANKS. I JUST KEEP THINKING I WANT TO TAKE THE KIDS AND TAKE PICTURES THERE. IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL. IT’S REALLY PRETTY. SO THAT’S. ESPECIALLY WHEN EVERYTHING WILL BE IN BLOOM. IT’S GONNA BE REALLY GREAT. THAT’S EXCITING. AND, YOU KNOW, MAKING IT WAS A LITTLE MES
