Prime Day is Amazon’s biggest sales event of the year. For 48 hours, Prime members see massive markdowns and go on a mega-shopping spree for items like AirPods, air fryers and Amazon devices. What is Prime Day?Prime Day is Amazon’s annual deals event that takes place in multiple countries like the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and Japan. The sales event features two days of epic deals on top-rated products from popular brands across multiple categories like tech, fashion, kitchen and home appliances. A key part of Prime Day is that it is an exclusive event. Only people subscribed to Amazon Prime are able to participate in Prime Day and unlock massive discounts. A monthly membership to Amazon Prime will cost you $14.99 per month, while an annual membership costs $139. When is Prime Day?Amazon announced Wednesday that Prime Day will be taking place starting Jul. 11 and wrapping up at the end of the day on Jul. 12. "New deals will drop every 30 minutes during select periods throughout the event, with deep discounts on products from the hottest brands," Amazon officials said in a press release. "We're also offering early deals you can shop now."Part of those early deals include back to school items and savings on a number of Amazon devices. Amazon’s first Prime Day shopping event took place on Jul 15, 2015, lasting for 24 hours and spanning nine countries. Amazon’s website states Prime Day came to life as a way to celebrate Prime members on Amazon’s 20th birthday. But there was one year when Prime Day did not occur in July. That was back in 2020 when Amazon held two separate Prime Days: one in India in August and another one for 19 other countries from Oct. 13 to Oct. 14. Prime Day was held from July 12 to July 13 in 2022. Amazon officials said 2022 was the biggest Prime Day event in Amazon’s history as Prime members purchased more than 300 million items worldwide. What’s on sale on Prime Day?So many products, from best-selling items like Apple AirPods to Crest Whitestrips, could be on sale during the 48-hour event. Some items might see deeper discounts for a limited time during the event through what Amazon labels as “Lightning Deals.” Amazon officials said some of the best-selling categories in the U.S. for Prime Day in 2022 were consumer electronics, household essentials and home. Savings included 80% off on Amazon Fire smart TVs, 50% off on select Hasbro toys and 45% off on select vacuums from Shark and iRobot. Amazon has not revealed if Prime Early Access Sale will return ahead of the holiday season this year. What should I buy during Prime Day?Our advice is to first make a wishlist on Amazon to track what you would like to keep an eye on as Prime Day approaches. Apple products are typically the most popular items that people have on their watchlist as they see tremendous markdowns. Robot vacuums, kitchen appliances like blenders and air fryers, Amazon devices like the Smart Plug and Blink security cameras are other products worth looking into.
