WTAE Editorial: The meaning of Memorial Day
THIS IS A WTAE EDITORIAL SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD. IS CHARLES W. WOLFERTZ III PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF WTAE MEMORIAL DAY. TO MANY, IT MARKS THE UNOFFICIAL START OF SUMMER. WHILE MANY OF US WILL BE TRAVELING OR ENJOYING PICNICS AND POOL PARTIES THIS WEEKEND, THE MESSAGE OF THIS MONDAY SHOULD NOT BE FORGOTTEN. WE BELIEVE IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THE TRUE MEANING OF MEMORIAL DAY TO HONOR THE MILITARY MEN AND WOMEN WHO DIED WHILE DEFENDING OUR NATION AND ITS VALUES. ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS DECORATION DAY, IT ORIGINATED IN THE YEARS FOLLOWING THE CIVIL WAR AND BECAME A FEDERAL HOLIDAY IN 1971. THE LAST MONDAY IN MAY ISN’T THE ANNIVERSARY OF ANY PARTICULAR BATTLE. INSTEAD, EVERY BATTLE AND ALL VETERANS ARE HONORED. PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT ON MONDAY TO REMEMBER ALL THE SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN WHO PAID THE ULTIMATE PRICE, ONE WHICH CAN NEVER FULLY BE REPAID.
