AFTER 35 YEARS, THE COUPLE IS RETIRING, BUT SO FAR, NO ONE ELSE HAS STEPPED IN TO BUY THE STORE. IT SITS NEXT TO A SENIOR CITIZENS HIGH RISE. MANY OF THEM DON’T HAVE TRANSPORTATION TO GET TO THE NEXT CLOSEST GROCERY STORE EITHER. IN ELIZABETH OR BELLE VERNON. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE WE HAVE TO SHOP. A LOT OF THEM WALK OVER HERE WITH BUGGIES AND TAKE THE BUGGY BACK, GO UP THE ELEVATOR TO THEIR APARTMENT WITH GROCERIES. THEY EXPRESSED ANY CONCERN NOW THAT THIS STORE IS CLOSING? OH, YEAH. A Giant Eagle grocery store in Westmoreland County will close its doors for good next month.Giant Eagle store closing: Watch our report in the video above.June 23 is the last day for the West Newton location, according to a statement released by a Giant Eagle spokesperson Friday.The supermarket on Robertson Street is independently owned by Mike and Maryann Bingey, who have decided to retire and close the store."I have been shopping here for a long time. Hopefully someone will come in and buy it and run it the way it has been," shopper Chris Bryan said. "It's just really sad for the community.""It's going to hurt a lot of the elderly because of the travel involved (to a different store), and the convenience. I know I come here at least every other day," shopper John Praskavich said.Giant Eagle said the pharmacy at the West Newton location will continue to operate, with no disruption in service."We have greatly appreciated the support of the West Newton community for these past 35 years," the Bingeys said in a statement. "And we thank our team members for their commitment to helping us meet the needs of our customers."
