CRIME PREVENTION, SOAKING UP THE APPLAUSE THAT WILL HELP LAUNCH HER CAREER IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR EMMA MEYER RECEIVING THE FIRST EVER OFFICER, SEAN SLUGANSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. I WISH IT WILL MAKE HIM PROUD KNOWING THAT I’M GOING TO GO INTO LAW ENFORCEMENT AND I HOPE TO FULFILL WHAT HE HAS IN THE LAW ENFORCEMENT FIELD. EMMA WILL ATTEND ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY IN THE FALL TO PURSUE A DEGREE IN FORENSIC SCIENCE. ENROLL IN THE POLICE ACADEMY AND TRY TO EARN A SPOT ON THE FBI. EVIDENCE RESPONSE TEAM. I’VE JUST ALWAYS HAD PASSION FOR HELPING OTHERS, AND I KNOW THAT I WANTED TO BE IN IT. SOME WAY. AND FOR A WHILE I WANTED TO BE AN OFFICER LIKE OFFICER SLUGANSKI HAS BEEN. BUT I ACTUALLY FOUND A FIELD IN FORENSIC SCIENCE THAT HELPED GIVE OTHERS CLOSURE. SEAN’S SISTERS, SARA AND SHEILA, PRESENTED EMMA WITH HER SCHOLARSHIP. THAT MEANS SO MUCH TO US, AND SHE’S GOING TO HELP SO MANY PEOPLE. WE’RE REALLY PROUD OF HER AND WE REALLY ARE EXCITED TO SEE WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR HER. IN HER ESSAY, EMMA WROTE THAT TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, YOU NEED INTEGRIT COURAGE AND DRIVE ALL THE TRAITS SEAN WAS KNOWN FOR IN HIS CAREER AND IN HIS COMMUNITY. OBVIOUSLY, I’M ON GETTING THIS AS A POSITIVE THING COMING FROM SEAN’S ALMA MATER, HIGH SCHOOL. THIS IS WHERE HE WENT TO SCHOOL AT. SO, YOU KNOW, IT’S TOUGH EVERY DAY, BUT HAVING THESE POSITIVE OUTLETS IS GOOD FOR US AS WELL. WE’RE GETTING THROUGH DAY BY DAY. THERE ARE OBVIOUSLY DAYS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS, BUT THIS IS A MOMENT OF LIGHT FOR US TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE SOMETHING LIKE THIS IN SEAN’S NAME AND FOR HIS LEGACY TO LIVE ON. MULTIPLE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES HELPED TO CREATE THIS SCHOLARSHIP AS WELL, AND THERE ARE MANY FUNDRAISERS PLANNED TO HELP GROW THE FUND. Baldwin High School senior Emma Meyer received the first-ever Officer Sean Sluganski Memorial Scholarship on Wednesday.Officer Sean Sluganski was killed in the line of duty back in February, responding to a call in McKeesport. Sluganski graduated from Baldwin High School in 2009. The officer's family joined with the Baldwin-Whitehall Educational Foundation to create a scholarship for a graduating senior pursuing a career in law enforcement and crime prevention."I wish it would make him proud, knowing that I'm going to go into law enforcement," Meyer said. "And I hope to fulfill what he has in the law enforcement field." Meyer will attend Arizona State University in the fall to pursue a degree in forensic science, enroll in the police academy and earn a place on the FBI Evidence Response Team."I've just always had a passion for helping others," she said. "And I know that I wanted to be in some way. And for a while, I wanted to be an officer like Officer Sluganski has been. But I actually found a field in forensic science to help give others closure."Sluganski's sisters, Sarah and Shela, presented Meyer with her scholarship."That means so much to us," Sarah Greiner said. "And she's going to help so many people. We're really proud of her. And we really are excited to see what the future holds for her."In her essay, Meyer wrote that to be successful in law enforcement, you need integrity, courage, and drive — all the traits Sluganski was known for in his career and his community.Shela Sluganski said, "Obviously, Emma getting this is a positive thing, coming from Sean's alma mater high school.
