WTAE Editorial: What's next for Century III Mall?
THIS IS A WTAE EDITORIAL SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD IS CHARLES W WOLFORD’S, PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF WTAE. LAST WEEK, A TEEN WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER FALLING THROUGH THE ROOF OF THE CENTURY THREE MALL, WHILE THE TEEN SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THERE. THIS ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDABLE. THE CENTURY THREE MALL HAS BEEN ABANDONED FOR OVER FOUR YEARS. OVER THOSE FOUR YEARS, THE ENTIRE AREA HAS BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD, AN EYESORE FOR ANYONE PASSING BY. ALSO, IT HAS BECOME AN AREA FOR GROUPS TO BREAK IN AND VANDALIZE. A LITTLE OVER FOUR WEEKS AGO, THERE WAS A THREE ALARM FIRE AT THE MALL THAT IS NOW BEING INVESTIGATED AS ARSON. THE OWNERS OF THE NOW ABANDONED MALL, MOONBEAM CAPITAL, HAVE NOT COMMENTED ON THE RECENT FALL OR THE INVESTIGATION OF THE FIRE. WHEN WILL MOONBEAM TAKE ACTION? WILL IT TAKE SOMEONE GETTING KILLED ON THE PROPERTY FOR THEM TO REACT? WE BELIEVE MOONBEAM NEEDS TO PAY TO HAVE THE MALL STRUCTURED KNOCKED DOWN TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER EVENTS. OUR SOUTH HILLS NEIGHBORS DESERVE PEACE OF MIND AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO BETTER THEIR COMMUNITY. WTAE WELCOME
