Very Local: A look at Andrew Carnegie's first public library in Braddock
Today we're doing it big in Braddock *** K ***, the bottom *** K *** Braddock Beach where it all began my hometown and the birthplace of the Drinking Partners podcast. When I was *** kid, this borough of the bird was vibrant and full of life and it's nice to see some of that energy coming back to Braddy and leading the way is the Brad Carnegie library. Old stomping grounds. Yeah, man. I mean, library has *** lot of historical significant. I didn't spend *** whole lot of time in the library as *** youth. That's when you're supposed to go to the library. I don't, hey, hey, my name is Jones and I am the mayor of Braddock. I am the youngest mayor in Braddock's history. Nice to see you guys again. Hey, very nice to see you again as well. Thank you for, uh having us back out, you know, at the beautiful library. Yes. My first time here. I know you two kind of grew up around this, but I, I've not been to the, this was my second home. Uh, this was like my third home. I didn't, I didn't find it until I was *** little older and in college, I never thought I would be visiting the library and like not my neighborhood. I gotta see where my mans is from. I'm Vicky Vargo. I'm the executive director of the Braddock Carnegie Library Association. Let's take *** look around. This building is Carnegie's first library in the United States. We are *** national historic landmark. Carnegie built this library for his workers. This building had the unspoken rule that it was only welcome to certain people, no instruction to staff. It was just understood. None of us here, right? Certain people, certain people being white men, right? Thankfully, the community saved this building. We are about to embark on *** $15 million campaign to renovate this entire building. These are blueprints for the renovation and currently we got 50% of the building done. 100% of the building will be usable once the renovations are finished, this is now the adult library. So when you say adult library, you're not, it's not the same as an adult bookstore. I'm sitting here like maybe I should say 17 and older. Ok, let's move on to the rest of the building. Let's take *** look at the pool and I'll tell you *** little bit about what it will be. You all actually really had *** pool at the library as well. Yes, Carnegie finally realized that *** free library will not pay the bills, built *** swimming pool, gymnasium and *** theater you had to pay to use. It would be great to have *** community swimming pool. But the humidity from the pool would cost *** lot of damage to the books, to the computers. So, since it won't be *** swimming pool anymore, it's going to be called the Book Dive where they're gonna renovate it. They're gonna put couches in there and they're gonna put books in there and you can just chill is full of big ideas. Wait until you see the theater, the theater is beautiful. This is the music hall, auditorium, theater space, you know, as *** performer, you could project very nicely. The sound in here. Yes, acoustics are great. Acoustics are great in here. You can see some of the samples of the renovated seats. They will be wider because 21st century people are much bigger than they were. I'm still trying to wrap my head around all of the space in this library. We gotta check out the gym. All Brad was coming to the library for everything except this is the gym. It will stay *** gym. This is crazy. Y'all have *** pool, *** music auditorium, *** gym with *** basketball hole and adult books. This is one of two spaces that has been repurposed. There was *** boxing ring in here and when the building reopened, they took *** lot of that equipment out of here. I like this view. You can see. It's crazy. I used to watch the, uh, smoke coming out of the smoke stacks from the steel mill. And I used to think that they were making clouds and then, well, he should have been using the library and then you could have read about how clouds really look. Right. I mean, I wasn't spending enough time here.
