State House resolution seeks to change Pennsylvania flag
A Pennsylvania lawmaker is proposing a redesign of the commonwealth's flag. State Rep. Joe Webster, a Democrat from Montgomery County, said in a memorandum for the upcoming legislation that "(m)any would struggle" to identify the Pennsylvania flag among many similarly designed state flags. Pennsylvania's flag features the state coat of arms against a blue background. As part of a potential redesign, Webster proposes the establishment of a Pennsylvania State Flag Commission "to study the history of the state flag, solicit design submissions for a new state flag, and recommend changes to the state flag."In his memo, Webster mentions the North American Vexillological Association, which calls itself "the largest organization of flag enthusiasts and scholars in the world." A 2001 NAVA survey listed Pennsylvania's flag number 57 out of 72 of the flags representing the U.S. and Canadian states, provinces and territories.
