MARY THEY SURE DO. MARIA AND THIS BEAR HAS BEEN MAKING TRACKS ALL OVER THE SOUTH SHORE. THIS WAS ONE OF A NUMBER OF SIGHTINGS AND CLOSE ENCOUNTERS IN THE PAST 48 HOURS HERE IN COHASSET. COME ON, LARS. IT’S JUST A BLACK BEAR IN THE BACKYARD. THIS IS THE MOMENT, LARS. A 110 POUND GREAT PYRENEES CAME FACE TO FACE WITH A BLACK BEAR. IT WAS. HOLY MOLY, LARS, LEAVE IT FOR LARS. IT WAS A TAIL WAGGING MOMENT. NOT SO MUCH FOR YOGI. THE BEAR WAS GROWLING. ACTUALLY, THE BEAR WAS DOING THIS KIND OF LOW OVER. HE WAS NOT ALL THAT EXCITED TO SEE LARS. THAT’S WHEN VINCENT DUNN SWOOPED IN AND MADE HIS MOVE. I THOUGHT ABOUT IT FOR A SECOND. THEN I WAS LIKE, I JUST I DON’T WANT THIS TO GO SOUTH. FORTUNATELY, LARS IS NOT EASILY SPOOKED. A LIVESTOCK PROTECTOR BY BREED. HE KNOWS HIS OWN STRENGTH. HE LOVES THE OUTDOORS, GETS AROUND TOWN IN STYLE, ESPECIALLY WHEN HIS PARENTS TAKE HIM FOR ICE CREAM. AND IN THIS MOMENT WAS TOTALLY CHILL. HE DIDN’T EVEN BARK. HE GENERALLY SAVES THAT FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. THEY’RE KIND OF NOCTURNAL, ALL KIND OF REALLY LOUD BARKERS. LARS, LEAVE IT. OH, MY GOD. THE WHOLE ENCOUNTER WAS ACTUALLY A LOT MORE TRAUMATIC. SLASH EXCITING FOR LARS FAMILY. I WAS LIKE, I HAVEN’T SEEN A BLACK BEAR EVEN IN ALASKA, NEVER MIND IN COHASSET. BUT IN THE PAST TWO DAYS, THIS BLACK BEAR COULD BE SEEN ALL OVER TOWN. COHASSET POLICE KEPT A CLOSE EYE AND A RUNNING PICTURE SHOW ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE. BACK ON JERUSALEM ROAD, THE DUNNS WERE RELIEVED WHEN THE BEAR FINALLY MADE HIS EXIT AND THEN CLIMBED DOWN THESE ROCKS AND INTO THE POND AND STARTED SWIMMING AND SWAM RIGHT ACROSS AND THEN JUST AMBLED INTO THE WOODS LIKE YOU OWN THE PLACE THAT COHASSET POLICE SAY THE BEAR SEEMS TO BE HEADING NORTH. AND THIS EVENING, HINGHAM POLICE TWEETED THIS PHOTO OF THE BEAR OVER NEAR WORLD’S END. POLICE ARE ASKING RESIDENTS TO KEEP AN EYE OUT AND TO KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. Dog comes face-to-face with black bear in his backyard

A family from Cohasset, Massachusetts, is feeling fortunate that their dog is unharmed after it had a close encounter with a black bear, as there has been an uptick in bear sightings in the region.The Dunn family, of Cohasset — which is in the area of Massachusetts Bay — has shared a video of their 110-pound Great Pyrenees, Lars, coming face to face with a bear in the backyard of their home."It was — holy moly!" said Vincent Dunn, the dog's owner. "I haven't seen a black bear even in Alaska, never mind in Cohasset."The video shows Lars calmly wagging his tail and not barking as he looked at the bear from across a row of plants."He generally saves (the barking) for the middle of the night," Dunn said of his dog. "(Great Pyrenees dogs) are kind of nocturnal, kind of really loud barkers."However, the bear did not have the same cool reaction, as Dunn said he could hear it making a low growl."He was not all that excited to see Lars," Dunn said.That is when Dunn decided to make a move. He grabbed Lars by the collar to get him away from the bear and walked him back to their house."I thought about it for a second, then I was like: 'I don't want this to go south,'" Dunn said.The Dunn family was then relieved once the bear made its exit."Climbed down these rocks and into the pond. He started swimming and swam right across, and then just ambled into the woods like he owned the place," Dunn said.Cohasset police have kept a close eye as a black bear, believed to be the same bear encountered by Lars, has been spotted all across town over the past two days.
