Pennsylvania Turnpike announces overnight westbound closure from Breezewood to New Stanton
An overnight closure of the westbound Pennsylvania Turnpike this weekend comes with a 127-mile detour for drivers.
The turnpike commission said the closure will be from Breezewood (Exit 161) to New Stanton (Exit 75), starting at 11 p.m. on Saturday and continuing until about 6 a.m. on Sunday, weather permitting.
"The seven-hour closure is needed for crews to safely conduct necessary road work to implement an interim traffic crossover as part of the next phase of a total reconstruction project between mile markers 102-109 in Somerset County," the commission said in a statement.
Here is the turnpike's suggested detour for westbound traffic:
- Exit at Breezewood and follow Route 30 west (18.7 miles)
- Follow Interstate 99 north (30.1 miles)
- Follow Route 22 west (64.5 miles)
- Follow PA Turnpike Route 66 south (13.9 miles)
- Re-enter the turnpike at New Stanton
"The more than 100-mile detour is necessary to safely accommodate the volume of diverted traffic," the turnpike's statement said. "Travelers should expect higher than normal traffic volumes on this detour route during the closure and should plan accordingly. Message boards will be placed to inform customers of the closure."
During the closure, the turnpike commission says vehicles will be permitted to enter at Donegal (Exit 91) and travel west.
