Charleroi magistrate's son killed in crash weeks before starting at police department
The son of a Charleroi magistrate judge has died in a car crash just weeks before he was set to start work with California Borough police.
Glenn Porter died in Bridgeville, Delaware, just before midnight on Friday while on the way to a family vacation with his mother, father and girlfriend. According to Delaware State Police, the 20-year-old was struck on Seashore Highway after a Jeep Wrangler crossed the double-yellow lines. The Jeep sideswiped his parents' car and hit Porter's Dodge Avenger.
Police say Porter was taken to an area hospital where he later died.
Porter's 19-year-old girlfriend from Stockdale, Kylie Quigley, was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Jeep, a 49-year-old woman from Easton, Maryland, was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not released that driver's name. Porter's parents were uninjured.
Police say the roadway was closed for almost four hours during the investigation. Why the Jeep crossed the center lines remains unknown as Delaware state police continue to investigate.
Porter, son of Judge Eric Porter, had just graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania's police academy. The California Borough Police Department posted their condolences on Facebook, saying Porter had been their most recent hire. He was scheduled to begin work in the coming weeks.
"Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with his family and friends in this difficult time," the department said.
A GoFundMe has been established in the Porter family's name. A separate fundraiser was set up for the Quigley family. As of Sunday, the two pages combined had raised over $46,000.
