PROJECT DAY OF GIVEN AT THE FOOD BANK. I AM JOINED BY CHARLOTTE, CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER. TALK ABOUT HOW FAR YOU CAN STRETCH THE DOLLARS THAT COME IN AS PART OF TODAY’S DONATION. >> THE FOOD BANK HAS ENORMOUS BUYING POWER. WE WORK WITH WHOLESALERS. WE NEED DOLLARS FOR TRANSPORTATION. WE ARE ABLE TO STRETCH A DOLLAR IN A WAY THAT YOU AND I AS AVERAGE CITIZENS CANNOT. IF WE RECEIVE A DONATION, ONE DOLLAR CAN PROVIDE UP TO FIVE MEALS WITH THE WAY WE BRING FOOD IN AND DISTRIBUTE IT OUT. IT IS THE MULTIPLIER EFFECT. TODAY BECAUSE OF THE DONATION, THAT SUPPORT GOES EVEN FURTHER. ALL DONATIONS UP TO $50,000 WILL BE MATCHED. REPORTER: A ONE DOLLAR DONATION COULD PROVIDE 10 MEALS. LET’S TALK FOR THE NEED. >> WE ARE SEEING LARGE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE COMING TO THE FOOD BANK DIRECTLY OR TO OUR PARTNER PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE STATE. RIGHT NOW, THE NEED FEELS LIKE IT DID EARLY ON IN THE PANDEMIC. EARLY ON IN THE PANDEMIC COME OUT FOR SOME FAMILIES, THAT WAS AN EPISODIC NEED. RIGHT NOW, THIS IS GETTING AT THE MONTHLY BUDGET AND PEOPLE MAKING TOUGH CHOICES ABOUT PUTTING FOOD ON THE TABLE OR PAYING RENT OR UTILITIES READ ALL OF THOSE TOUGH CHOICES THAT PEOPLE ARE MAKING IN ORDER TO PUT TOGETHER HOUSEHOLD BUDGET. WTAE Channel 4 partnered with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank for a Day of Giving on Thursday.Our 5th annual Project Hunger Telethon raised $104,000.84 Lumber and Nemacolin matched all donations up to $50,000.Anyone who wants to donate can always do so. Here's a link for online donations.The food bank says when it comes to emergency food assistance, the need is seven times higher now than it was last year.And food insecurity impacts all walks of life, including our children. One in eight kids is at risk for hunger.
