Woman shares her story after turning to North Hills food pantry
>> THEY WERE THERE. THEY WERE THERE TO HELP ME. AND THEY HELPED ME FROM DOWN SLIDING -- FROM DOWNSIZING EVEN MORE. >> ELAYNE MASTERS IS THANKING THE PEOPLE OF THE NORTH HILLS COMMUNITY OUTREACH’S FOOD PANTRY. SEVERAL YEARS AGO, THEY WERE THERE WHEN MASTERS’ SUFFERED A NUMBER OF SETBACKS. HER MOTHER, DIAGNOSED WITH A TERMINAL ILLNESS. AND HER BUSINESS TAKING A DOWNTURN, AND THEN, A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AFTER A FALL DOWN THE STAIRS. MASTERS TURNED TO THE NHCO FOR HELP, AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID. >> SO, WE WALKED OVER TO THE PANTRY AND IT WAS LIKE A LITTLE SUPERMARKET. IT WAS AMAZING. >> THE FOOD PANTRY ESPECIALLY HELPED MASTERS BY PROVIDING FRESH VEGETABLES WHEN SHE WANTED TO FIND THE RIGHT DIET TO HELP HER PREVENT A NEED FOR EXTRA MEDICATION FOR A THYROID ISSUE, . >> THE IMPORTANCE IS AFTER SIX MONTHS ON THIS DIET, I WAS ABLE TO BRING MY THYROID NUMBERS DOWN ENOUGH THAT MY DOCTOR DID NOT HAVE TO UP MY MEDICATION AND I HAVE GOT BETTER HEALTH ALL THE WAY AROUND. I FEEL BETTER. JUST EATING MUCH MORE HEALTHILY. >> MASTERSSENDING A MESSAGE TO OTHERS WHO MAY NEED HELP FROM LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES AND THE GREATER PITTSBURGH COMMUNITY FOOD BANK. >> DON’T BE EMBARRASSED. IT IS HARD. I KNOW IT IS HARD TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PLACE YOU ARE IN IN LIFE AND THAT YOU NEED HELP. I KNOW PEOPLE WHO WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY KIND OF HELP. BUT WE ALL NEED HELP IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. YOU CAN GIVE BACK. YOU WILL FIND A WAY TO GIVE BACK. BUT DON’T BE ASHAMED TO PUT YOUR HAND OUT WHEN YOU NEED HELP. THAT IS WHAT COMMUNITY IS FOR. >> RYAN RECKER PITTSBURGH’S ACTION NEWS 4. Elayne Masters is thanking the people of the 's food pantry.Several years ago, they were there when Masters suffered a number of setbacks. Her mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness and her business took a downturn.Then, she suffered a traumatic brain injury after a fall down the stairs.Masters turned to the NHCO for help and that's exactly what they did.The food pantry helped Masters by providing fresh vegetables when she wanted to find the right diet to help her prevent a need for extra medication for a thyroid issue.“After six months on this diet, I was able to bring my thyroid numbers down enough that my doctor did not have to up my medication,” Masters said. “I've got better health all around. I feel better eating much more healthily.”Masters is sending a message to others who may need help from local food pantries and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.“Don't be embarrassed,” she said, “You can give back. You'll find a way to give back, but don't be ashamed to put your hand out when you need help.
