It's already been a historic season for the Belle Vernon High School football team. On Saturday, the Leopards will try to cap it off with a state championship.
The team is playing in a PIAA championship game for the first time in school history, an accomplishment that isn't lost on the team.
"To do something nobody else has done is outstanding," junior quarterback Braden Laux said Thursday.
The Leopards (11-2) will take on Neumann-Goretti (11-3) in the Class 3A championship game Saturday at 1 p.m. Advancing to the last game of the season was one of the goals head coach Matt Humbert shared with his team to start the season.
"We wanted to be able to control our expiration date and those kids did it," Humbert said. "The kids have really taken the torch of success that previous teams had and ran with it."
The run to a state championship game has captured the attention of everyone in the Belle Vernon area, a district that covers parts of Westmoreland and Fayette counties.
"It's a quintessential football community," Humbert said. "It's something you could almost make a movie about."
"No matter where you go, you're getting told 'good job' and 'congratulations.' It's just a loving community around here," senior linebacker Parker Jewell said.
The high school held a sendoff for the team Friday morning as they head east to Mechanicsburg for the game.
